Be Afraid of “Dark Knight Rising”

Dear Chris, It seems like there are almost no new movies opening in July. What gives?

The above is an imaginary letter I sent myself but I will answer it anyway: It’s true that there are fewer movies opening, particularly in the first half of the month, than usual. And it’s because of two movies that are opening: “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” Other studios are giving those blockbusters a wide berth, believing that they’re likely to suck up most of the available movie dollars (“Spider-Man” opened July 3 and “Knight Rises” is July 19), so it would be useless to release too many other films in the same time span other than a few titles (“Katy Perry: Part of Me,” “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” “Savages”) that appeal to different audiences.

Don’t worry, though: Lotsa stuff coming in August!
